Environmental enrichment influences neuronal stem cells in the adult crayfish brain.

New neurons are incorporated throughout life into the brains of many vertebrate and nonvertebrate species. This process of adult neurogenesis is regulated by a variety of external and endogenous factors, including environmental enrichment, which increases the production of neurons in juvenile mice and crayfish. The primary goal of this study was to exploit the spatial separation of the neuronal...

Physiological responses to acute silver exposure in the freshwater crayfish (Cambarus diogenes diogenes)--a model invertebrate?

Adult crayfish (Cambarus diogenes diogenes) exposed to 8.41 +/- 0.17 microg silver/L (19.4% as Ag+) in moderately hard freshwater under flow-through conditions for 96 h exhibited ionoregulatory disturbance, elevated metabolic ammonia (T(amm)) production and substantial silver accumulation in the gills, hemolymph, and hepatopancreas. The ionoregulatory disturbance included both a generally reduc...

Physiological roles of free D- and L-alanine in the crayfish Procambarus clarkii with special reference to osmotic and anoxic stress responses.

Under hyper-salinity stress from freshwater to 17 and 25 ppt seawater, red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii largely accumulated D- and L-alanine together with glycine, L-glutamine, and L-proline in both muscle and hepatopancreas. The increases of D- and L-alanine in muscle were the highest in all amino acids and reached 6.8- and 5.4-fold, respectively, from freshwater to 25 ppt seawater. Thes...

Changes in the Amounts of the Molt - lnhibiting Hormone in Sinus Glands during the Molt Cycle of the American Crayfish , Procambarus clarldi

The purposes of this study are to determine the molt cycle of the American crayfish, Procambarus clarkit; and to quantify the amounts of the molt-inhibiting hormone (Prc-MIH) in the hemolymph and neurohemal sinus glands during the molt cycle of the American crayfish. The molt cycle was classified into six stages based on the changes in volumes of gastroliths in the stomach and ecdysteroid titer...

Characterization of naturally occurring agglutinin in the crab Varuna litterata

Naturally occurring agglutinin was analyzed in the hemolymph of crab Varuna litterata by hemagglutination assay (HA). Hemolymph of V. litterata had the capacity to agglutinate a variety of mammalian erythrocytes, rat > rabbit = guinea pig = horse = buffalo = human A = human B > human O > dog > donkey = goat. Among the various tissues tested for HA, maximum HA titer was observed in the hemolymph...
